Lighting

The magic ingredient; without light, photography would be impossible. Whilst light itself is highly significant, very low light, almost impossible to see with the naked eye, is equally significant to the photographer because this can be compensated for and captured by using long exposures, higher ISO’s, and wider apertures.

There is also the quality of light to consider, but with experience, is there really such a thing as bad light? By ‘light’, I mean, any form, whether it be direct sunlight, tungsten bulb, torch, candle or moon/starlight.

Keep in mind that natural lighting is constantly changing, day to day, hour by hour, min by min and therefore you will need to observe the consequential effects of this, in terms of the colour, the direction and harshness, and which will all come in time as you take your exposures and begin to notice patterns occurring and you make the necessary adjustment to settings to compensate.

The same rule applies to artificial light except that you can modify it to suit and it can always remain the same, allowing you more time to make adjustments to learn from.

These blogs are aimed at making you aware of the crucial elements, where you then find your personal preferences to taste and pursue further study in the particular area as you traverse your own photographic journey.
